ALGORITHMIC ANIMATION |

The work in this section consists of experiments in the programming language processing. On the right is a collaborative project that marks the beginning of these projects. In George Legrady's Algorithmic Visualization course at UC Santa Barbara, I was paired with two collaborators: Uli Schmidts and Ashok Basawapatna, a graphic designer and electrical engineer respectively. Our work took the architectural visualization of Buckminster Fuller as a point of departure. We constructed a set of virtual truncated octahedron, one of many space-filling three dimensional polytopes, that stacked stochastically in space. Endlessly building on itself, the configurations seem to read across scales, from cancerous cell growth to the shape of an alien space station. Presented at 2004 UC Darnet conference hosted by UC Berkeley.

Above: A plane where each vertex oscillates at varying frequencies in three dimensions. Click here to see the animation and here for the source code. Below: A topologically different shape than the plane, yet a similar result. Here, the points of the membrane oscillate with a frequency inversely proportional to its distance from the center. Below: Two animations featuring different types of simulation. On the left is a piece inspired by the synchronization of some species of fireflies. Here, the objects synchronize their flashing and spatial position. On the right is a gravitational simulation, where point masses dynamically fall in and out of a stable orbit. In the animation a line is drawn between the current and previoius point in time, making visible the differences in the amount of change in each object. |
